Who are we?

Toni Popowski

I have always been interested in exercise and sport, particularly through school. Eventually university, work and family started to get in the way of me making exercise a priority, although I have always managed to do something, whether it be a game of netball or a bushwalk. Last year after having Charlie at age 44, I felt that I was really ready to start a more structured exercise routine. This is when I joined Jess at Flex Physio. Over time I started feeling stronger and fitter and even started running (well shuffling!!) and swimming, something that I hadn’t done since high school. At the beginning of this year I was looking for a challenge and goal to work towards, and a conversation with Jess lead to the idea of this TRY-athlon. I am really looking forward to training, swapping tips and complaining about how sore I am with a great bunch of women. I want to bust some of my health and fitness goals and watch and encourage other women to do the same. I hope the TRY-athlon and all the supporting events are collaborative, educational but also just heaps of fun. I love a good laugh.

I was never going to do the TRY-athlon last year. I thought I might just have a go at the Fun Run part, but the fitter I got and the more I was encouraged by a pretty persistent person the more I thought I could do the TRY. One day after jogging 7 kms I thought “Yep, I can do this!!” and it went from there. We all just need that one persistent person or people in our lives. Leading up to the TRY I was extremely anxious but with the help of a fantastic bunch of people around me I got started and I absolutely loved every minute of it. I enjoyed it so much that the next day I signed up for the Devonport Tri-It. I have now done 4 triathlons and heaps of 5/10 km runs, which my family now join me in.

I don’t enjoy exercise, there I said it!! But, I do like being active, and I want to be healthy. I am a mother and now grandmother and this is probably what has motivated me the most to be healthy. I want to be here for my girls and my grandchild, hopefully more to come. After years of not doing any real activity, I tried the odd water aerobics class, I decided it was time to get information and training. So I approached Jess at Flex Physio because as I haven’t been active to any real degree for a while, and I was getting on in age a bit, it was important to me that I get the right information and not to hurt myself. Best decision I could have made! Jess was fantastic with making sure my technique was correct and I can now say I do love weight training, I feel stronger and healthier than I have been in years.

Improving my fitness and health has become an important part of my life over the last couple of years. During my school years, exercise was a big part of my life, I was always involved in sports at school but as school life transitioned into work and family life, including fitness into my daily life became harder and harder until it didn’t exist. This led to health issues developing. Getting back into exercise and combining this with healthier eating has helped me to not only lose weight but has helped immensely with my health issues as well as ease stress and help me to feel stronger. I am excited to be a part of the Womens Tryathlon team and look forward to supporting women to improve their health and fitness.
